I'm sure there's a better way, but I figured out a work around. Apparently the purge/removal process was looking for a running proftpd daemon and since proftpd appears to be broken (no man pages even!) the purge/removal process was erroring out. So I made a copy of nedit (an editor for X) and renamed it to "proftpd", then fired it up with the new name. Then I tried purging proftpd and voila! Success! Then I was able to reinstall proftp and now I'm getting somewhere. Somehow or 'nother I've lost my ftp client in all of this, and neither apt-get nor dselect knows of just plain ftp. They know of cftp and lftp, etc. What do I need to install in order to get a plain ftp client reinstalled?
