I just went through this. Assuming that you have (made) a kernel with sound support, login as root and perform: cd /dev MAKEDEV audio That will create the audio devices for you, which include the dsp, mixer, etc. The "dsp" device is the "Digital Signal Processor" or "Digital Sound Processor" I believe.
