You didn't say what you were attempting to compile. The problem is that the directory containing ndbm.h is not in the standard include path that the build process is using for compiling. You have to explicitly specify at least one include path that contains the ndbm.h directory. If you are using the configure script supplied with the app/package, one way to do this is: ./configure --site-includes="/usr/include/db1" .... (rest of the options) Check the configure script supplied with the app and see what the exact option is to specify additional include directories (try ./configure --help), though the --site-includes option is a pretty standard way of specifying additional include dirs.
