Here is how you do it: reboot and at lilo prompt type linux init=/bin/sh This will rop you into shell. In there, mount -n -o remount rw
Then edit the /etc/passwd file and blank out root password field. (The second field). Or do that to shadow file, if you have one. Then sync and reboot.
