Well, why not trying to use procmail ?
I have a .procmailrc that e.g. saves all mail from this list here to
~/Mail/OLD/debian.user-l and ~/Mail/debian.user-l.
Then I read the ~/Mail/* and delete it but have a archive in ~/Mail/OLD.
Petty easy handling.
