I think it basically came down to two points - The only reason to use RPMs is to be able to install non-Debian software on Debian systems - Installing non-Debian software without carefull consideration and extra work by the user Will Not Work (tm) Alien is a good solution for #1 because it forces #2 :> If the LSB magically comes through in a major way then things might be different..
