Thanks to everyone who responded to this. As it turned out, the linux end and the null cable were fine all along. My problem is with the mac. Actually it is a Power Computing machine and I suspect that when I went to MacOS 8.x that I lost some proprietary ethernet device drivers.
The hazards of closed software, I guess... Thanks anyway, Mark
