Mea culpa, I should have referred to LyX (the 0.12BETA version I'm using) as
"early release" not new release, in any case I no longer think LyX is the
problem.

LyX will export .dvi files fine (as viewed with xdvi), however dvips cv.dvi -o
cv.ps gives me the same result I described previously, embedded eps figure
without any text.
