I had this problem before, with smail and sendmail... IIRC you want to masquerade as the isp domain, but configure your mailer to NOT accept mail for that domain. I think I had to turn off the option to rewrite unqualified address as well... so if you send mail to <user> it gets delivered locally, but if you send to <user>@ispdomain it gets sent to the smarthost. However, I'm not sure how to do that with exim.
