OK well I can probably help a bit with the install part but you may have to post to the rest of the list for the more detailed networking questions.
It sounds like your system is trying to start an Xserver for a graphical login and can't get the server running. So please confirm you have no Xwindows running at all? If so, when installing debian you need to request a command line login (not graphical) and go from there. You may need to update the Xwindows system to version 3.3.3 to use your graphics card. When you are answering all of the install questions you should set the default xserver to XF86_VGA (the most basic but compatible) or XF86_SVGA (for higher resolutions on generic cards). You should say no to all other Xservers. Do you know what sort of chipset your card has. You say it is a miro something. Is that compatible with any model like TNT or Matrox etc? I think it highly unlikely that you have stuffed you BIOS with the debian install. As to lilo, it can be hard to set up . Please send me your /etc/lilo.conf and your partition details and I will try to help. In the interim use a bootdisk. My computer is a Elitegroup Mainboard with AMD K5-133, 4x 16MB FPM, Harddisk Conner CFS850, MS-Serial-Mouse, Epson LQ-500 and a NIC SN3200 (Driver RTL 8029 for Linux on the Floppy). The graphic card is a miro40sv. CD-Rom Mitsumi FX400 and after AZT2x. There is nothing more. The Internet connection is a 2 MBit cabel modem with DHCP. The installation ??? I was running the install.bat and have selected the basic Workstation (ca.500 MB). I was following all instructions on the screen. than commes the installation. (arround 6 hours !!!) While decompressing, installing and compiling i had to answer mor then 200 (!!!) questions. p.e. I am confusing about the "default window manager". The installer had asked me I think 6 or 8 times for another. Generaly I have had coosen the default choice if I was asked. At the end I have had removed the CD from the drive and the computer reboots. and start with: LI (it hangs) I have a rescue disk and rebooted with it. now they is starting with ??? error messages (too fas for my eyes) and at the end they tell me ti can not start the X-Server. For some days I have restarted the computer and... I can not restart, it hangs after some lines with a CRC error. I have changed the Hard-disk (I am using racks) and runing my DOS development DJGPP at Bootup and HIMEM I get memory errors at adresses like 00800080h, 008001A2h, 00800542h, 008013C2h or 00801022h. A virus in the C-Mos ??? I have another workstation with a clean WinNT40 installation and have put my harddisk in the second rack for checking for virusses. NO VIRUS ON HARDDISK. Now Since I have tried to install Debian om ny Pentium the computer i not usabel. First Question Now: Can Linux destruct the Flash-BIOS ??? If I run the virus scanner F-PROT from a boot floppy the hangs. P.S.: I have formatted the Conner CFS850 with NTFS and have installed the WinNT for a new virusscanner to get this f... animal. I will try a new install of Debian 2.1 SLINK. Second Question Now: I am beginner in LINUX and have no experience with it. I have several Workstations (DR-DOS703, Dos622, WfW311 and WinNT40) and 8 Servers. I like to connect all to the internet with my cabel modem and 2 internal LAN'S (privat and public) How can I install a DEBIAN-Router fast and (if possibel with some help) easy because I am runing at time only one computer whit HD-racks. The Router must have 3 NIC'S 3C509TPO runing on a SOYO 486 DX4-100 whit RAM as much as I need. Note: I have tried to setup LRP (Linux Router Project) but the config files are very crypted. For the Router I need ONLY the minimum. Oh yes, I need a modul for the FTP-Server (pasive mode) Third Question comes soon: Web-, FTP-, Mail-, NEWS-Server Many Thanks for your help. Michelle from Strasbourg My Servers <http://www.michelle-is.com/> (Web/FTP/MAIL/NEWS/FINGER/...) does not work curently.
