This is probably not related to GL, but some (realy?) old cards don't
seem to provide the xv extention (you want that for at least mplayer). 
(Don't know why, perhaps they don't have a hardware overlay unit?)

The setup I've been using at home for a long time is the MBs built in
i810 chip as primary screen and an ATI IIc something (realy old, low
memory, but you I got it for free from a thrown away computer).
  These cards don't work well with mplayer, but functions perfectly well
for browsing the docs for whatever project your working with on you
primary screen.  I yesterday added a second (identical ati) card just
for fun, and it seemed to work fine too (though three screens on the
same desk leaves quite litle free space for papers and stuff:-).

If you want to run 3D games on both screens you most certainly want
something very different (and probbly more expensive) though...
