Thanks for the reply. You're about 10 hours too late :) I re-installed
last night. I now have a potato system, and apt-get is nice and quiet.
I'll keep this in mind in case I mess up again--which will most likely
happen somewhere down the road. 

Thanks for your time and help. Now I'm off to configure sound for my
system.
