One thing to try is to shut down/kill whatever process is holding the sound device. Try using "fuser -v /dev/dsp" (or /dev/audio, or whatever your sound device really is) (fuser is in the psmisc package) to see which it is. An the subject of sound, i've found esound to be quite useful--i can play mp3s using the newest x11amp (the cvs version, not the debian packaged (although it might work with some work)) and still have Licq play sounds with esdplay.
