Further to my questions, I have checked /usr/lib (stupid not to have done so earlier !) and the libraries do in fact exist.
Why then does ldconfig generate an error and does this mean that the installation is broken even though dselect didn't return an error ? Sorry for my silly mistake. Ivan.
