If it's a networked system, you may well be suffering an attack from the
network. There are some known problems with older kernel versions. If you're
running a kernel older than 2.0.36, you might want to try if upgrading to
2.0.36, the latest Alan Cox' 2.0.37pre, or the latest 2.2.X-acY kernel
helps.
