Not enough sleep. 
Using the install c.d.#1 I booted and began the install.
   4. Boot the installation system
   5. Configure the keyboard
   6. Create and mount Debian partition
I mounted my previous root partition, and skipped ahead to make it bootable, installed 
lilo in the mbr. Initialized the knoppix partition wiping it clean. Reboot to success!

I have not totally finished the "small hard disk partition as a rescue partition, and 
install a second Linux on that" yet!
