- From what I've seen on the Dell website, I suppose the SCSI adapter is a 
LSI20320, using the 53C1020 chip. LSI offers kernel patches for that 
chip although the link on their site is broken, because of a rather 
obvious spelling error.

The driver is part of the official kernel >2.4.7, 2.4.18 has the most 
recent MPT driver and it is contained on the boot floppies as a module. 
So if you haven't done so already, try to add the driver when you're 
asked to add modules during the installation.
