Also, there were several updates to the AWE driver (as well as data-corruption fixes) between 2.2.1 and 2.2.3). It might be a good idea to update to the current sources.
I don't think there's a .deb version of 2.2.3 on the main debian site yet... but I believe that http://netgod.net/ has the debianized source/image.
