well, i changed scd0 to hdc in /etc/xmcd/common.cfg and /etc/xmcd/devices.cfg and linked the latter to /etc/xmcd/hdc and i got music.

thanks, this will get me started. i couldn't see it using make menuconfig but make xconfig showed it grayed out.
it looks i'm still missing something. a package?
