try using this to start the Xserver
startx -- -bpp 16

You can change the /etc/X11/XF86Config.
in XF86Config
Section "Screen"
SubSection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "1280x1024" "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
just arrange the modes to your wish
