You can also do this by uncommenting some lines in /etc/syslog.conf:

daemon,mail.*;\
        news.=crit;news.=err;news.=notice;\
        *.=debug;*.=info;\
        *.=notice;*.=warn       /dev/tty12

So that Alt-F12 displays the most recent syslog messages, with very
little overhead.
