Netscape will not run under root also, you might note that.
As for programs not running, it might be because a command string in the
file is wrong. What window manager you use?
Or it might be that programs you want to use are not even installed.
syslog might help you with that. OR try running xdm, which provides a
real-time console for the syslog, where you can see what is wrong in a
system.
