The problem is that XDM is trying to start, but your x-config isn't right... what you need to do is this: at the LILO: prompt hold down the Ctrl key. this should let you type in the name of the image/OS you want to start. type: linux single if your normal kernel image isn't 'linux' then just type: <name-of-your-image> single the tab key will list the image options you have. In any case, this will reboot your computer into single-user-mode. Type in the root passwd when it asks, then do: chmod a-x /usr/X11R6/bin/xdm This will keep xdm from trying to start. reboot into normal mode and you'll be at a normal console login.
