Ok, I thought I would give installing kernel 2.2.1 a try. It's so easy,
right. Thought I would use dselect to help automate the process some
because I have no idea what is going on here. Anyway I tried using ftp
as the access method. I put "ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub"; into the site to
access. I entered a few more things like password and anonymous user
name. Then it asked me a couple questions about /contrib/stable....
(something like that). I can't duplicate everything I did and paste it
because now I'm being told:
"dselect: the access method area is already locked"
when I try to choose the access method.
I tried the man page for dselect and found,
The dselect package selection interface is confusing or
even alarming to the new user.
There is no easy way automatically to download and install
packages via anonymous FTP.
So how do I get dselect to allow me to select the access method again?
I tried "ctrl-alt-backspace" and starting over. That didn't help. I
get the same error message. I tried disconnecting and reconnecting the
internet connection. That didn't help.
Is there an easier way to do what I'm trying to do? This is my first
attempt at compiling a kernel. I thought I would go ahead and try 2.2.1
instead of the one I have 2.0.34. It was my understanding that dselect
would download, place the new kernel in the right directory and take
care of some linkage issues. Anyway if this can't be done I think I'll
just stick to the kernel I have for the time being.
