After re-compiling my kernel (2.0.34) and booting it off an experimental
floppy, I tried mounting a DOS-formatted floppy. Mount returned an error
along the lines of "I have no clue what 'msdos' means". My old kernel
could mount the disk fine.

So, after some more exploring in the kernel source's "make menuconfig"
command (very nice interface, BTW), I enabled "Native language support".
AHA! Lo and behold, all the DOS-like filesystems I could possibly imagine
showed up! Problem solved at last. Now I just have to wait an hour for
that little 486 to recompile. :(

Just wanted to share that little tidbit, in case anybody else is having the
same problem.
