That is basically what I do. I back up my /etc tree and my /home tree to a
zip. I do a complete backup once a week in a cron job and it still all fits on
one zip.
It does not require much of script
tar -cf /zip/home.tar.gz -C /home .
tar -cf /zip/etc.tar.gz -C /etc .
