Believe it or not, you are out of memory to allocate the DMA buffer. This annoys the heck out of me because the kernel doesn't move data to swap or free up cache to allocate a DMA buffer. It seems that you must have MemFree at a reasonable level. Try starting netscape (or another memory hog) and then exiting to push some stuff out to swap, then try the cat.
