Sounds like you need ext3 rather than ext2

Once a PC is basically working, your intermittent problems are probably 
slightly loose sockets near cpu/memory.  Other stuff (such as drive problems) 
would appear in kernel logs.

I recommend a powerdown, and a quick check of all pluggable components.
