According to the ghostscript printer compatibility page, the 870cxi works with ghostscript using the dj850 driver which is not part of the normal distribution. It shows this driver for the 870cse also, but says that one also works with the cdj5550 driver (color) or ljet4 driver (B/W). I think the diffence between the cxi and cse may be in the extra Win95 application software supplied (that is the case with the laserjet 6). The 720C, 722C, 820C and 1000C are listed as winprinters.
