Are you using startx? This should fire up the window manager and all the stuff. You can even do without the .xserverrc by doing, for example: startx wmaker -- :1 -bpp 16 I am using wmaker as argument to get the windowmanager I want. I do not use -bpp 16 actually because I have it as DefaultColorDepth in /etc/X11/XF86Config. Okay - I do not really use this at all :-) But I tried it and it worked.
