Actually, you can do this even if the BIOS doesn't support LBA (use DOS fdisk, not Linux fdisk).
If you don't have LBA, you will have to have the kernel (/vmlinuz or ??) within the first 1024 cylinders. See the Large-Disk mini-HOWTO for more information.
