This sounds like a configure failure. The source package is probably using some --with-bla-bla switches that are incompatible with your hamm install and cause other tests to fail. (you can check in /usr/src/XEmacs/xemacs20-20.4-5/Installation) XEmacs 21.2.x (the bleeding edge development version) build out of the box on my ham system. Jan P.S. If that really is the case you should file a bug report against the debian package. Using --with-bla-bla=yes is generally bad.
