PCI NE2000 cards are supported directly in kernels >= 2.0.34. In earlier kernels, they work fine using the ISA NE2000 driver. Unfortunately some NE2000 clones are more compatible than others. Mine (generic with Realtek 8029 chip) works fine with either driver.
