Man, is the Adaptec SCSI card ever a FAQ. I wonder if this is in the FAQ-O-Matic... Should be.

You might want to try the boot disk mentionned below. I used the Debian 2.0 boot disk, and changed the kernel on it to one I compiled (on bo, but it works anyway) with patch aic support. It's at: ftp://phys.ocean.dal.ca/users/rhogee/Debian/00readme and, for ATAPI CDROM support: ftp://phys.ocean.dal.ca/users/rhogee/Debian/linux ftp://phys.ocean.dal.ca/users/rhogee/Debian/sys_map.gz if you have SCSI CDROM, grab: ftp://phys.ocean.dal.ca/users/rhogee/Debian/new-version/linux ftp://phys.ocean.dal.ca/users/rhogee/Debian/new-version/sys_map.gz I compiled PCI in, so I dunno if that will cause problems for you. Someone else else made Debian boot disks for the aic7xxx driver at: http://cs.tu-berlin.de/~doko/aic7xxx/ so you've got two to try out!
