I have been trying to figure this out for a long time. Most of the kde programs that I have installed have an inability to disply the buttons on their toolbar properly. This happens with the kde file browser and other things. Other kde programs, however, have a complete inability to start (kcmsamba and ktop, for example). They produce error messages like these:
