xgalaga: can't fire!

I installed the xgalaga deb.  It works, mostly (even sound!)...except
for the space key: I can't fire!  And the "q" and "Q" keys are also
useless.

Really, I can only move back and forth, which is pretty boring.
Anyone know what's up?
