It was installed using the alien package and it took me a few hours to make it work. The problem was that the installation simply overwrote important boot scripts (in /etc/init.d/ ...). I would suggest to read the book which comes with the cdrom first to find out how CDE starts, which files uses for its configuration AND to scan the rpm packages for what, where files will be installed. I would make backup copies of the current corresponding files.
