Linux 2.0.x kernels rely on knowledge of the compiler's method optimisation that is only valid for gcc 2.7.x, so you should use only a 2.7.x version to compile them; this is why Debian 2.0 ships with gcc 2.7.2.3 as the default compiler for C code. If you need a newer gcc version for compiling other code, use the "egcc" package.
