It's my understanding that:
    local dns server contacts one of the hosts from named.root
    local dns server asks about entire domain "3dillusion.com", it returns
      the list of name servers for that domain.
    local dns contacts one of those servers to ask about
      "shell.3dillusion.com".

IIRC, there is no dispatching based on the top-level domain (com, org,
net).
