ok....simple...
edit /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers
and comment out:
:0 local /usr/X11R6/bin/X

Then xdm will start without starting a local Xserver
(I could have sworn that was in the "Poor Man's XTerminal" Howto-ish Doc
I am in the middle of writting...but its not in there yet...)
