FWIW, I used to start X with XDM which is much more powerful but one day I moved my hard disk on a different system and XDM got me into some problems since the XF86Config files where uncompatible. I have now taken the habit of starting X with a startx in my users ~/.bash_profile but not for root ... -- Robert J.
