Not only of yours. Some have even made it a reality. See http://www.heise.de/ct/schan/ That is german project supported by C'T. It allows schools to connect to the internet using a specially prepared linux distribution to act as dial-up gateway and server. As far as I know this server comes with a special administration front-end that makes it easy for non-unix people to manage. This might make it easier to convince your colleages. It is used in real schools. The only thing left to do would be to translate the support programs and documentation into English (Are there german classes at your school?).
