ppp will not set a default route if a default route currently exists. Next time try this:-
route del default route add -net 172.16.x.x (172.16.0.0 if your netmask is 255.255.0.0) pon This time ppp will set a default route for you. The above may not be exactly right as it makes an assumption or two, but it will be close.
