Stick with "hamm" it is very stable in my opinion and it should be released as final soon. > I've reinstalled several times, and everytime I run dselect something > breaks and I wind up getting frustrated and wiping the drive and starting > over. Is it the same place every time? What error messages do you get? You mentioned that you are doing a fresh install so you should *not* have to run the autoup.sh script. > I've found some instructions (which are really above my head) for upgrading > from <2 to 2, but I'm not doing an upgrade; I'm doing a clean (new) > install. No. If you installed hamm from scratch an upgrade isn't necessary. > If I try to run dselect (via FTP over direct ethernet connection), I "know" > my system will break again. Did I not download apt-get, or > am I doing something wrong? Will it allow me to get the man command, X > Windows, etc, without breaking things, or am I just as well off with dselect? If you get through the basic install( i.e. the 7-8floppies or base2.0.tar.gz) then you should let us know what exactly dselect is compaining about. > Third: Why doesn't the less command work? It reports "bash: less: command > not found". If I remember correctly "less" is not included on the base-install disks. > Fourth: How do I set up my Debian 2.x system so I can telnet into it from > other computers? Can you ping other computers? Are your routes right? Are you you static or dynamic IP's? Does your ethernet card show up if you read through "dmesg |more"? If you can give a little more detail we can assist you with greater accuracy.
