By any chance had you upgraded to xbase 3.3.2.2-2 just before this
happens.  In that upgrade, the link from /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc to
/etc/X11/Xsession is broken.  The fix is to either add the link or upgrade
to 3.3.2.2-3.
