In my /etc/diald/diald.options I have the line:

connect "/usr/sbin/chat -t 120 ABORT BUSY ABORT 'NO CARRIER' '' ATE0V1 OK 
ATD5551212
CONNECT"

If your ISP uses CHAP this dial script should be sufficient.
