According to SuSE the problem in my case is not libc5 (or I wouldn't be able to run X -probeonly anyway...) but rather a general problem with Elsa AGP cards using Permedia2. Accordingly a new server has been announced for end of next week. Actually I already thought it had to be something like that after checking with Yamamoto's Fire GL XF86Config and finding out it's exactly the same as mine for the Synergy... Also, I got my hands on a Diamond Fire GL 1000 Pro AGP, and guess what - it ran straight away (not tested on Debian 2.0 yet, but should work according to Yamamoto) ! Thus I feel quite confident the Elsa problems will be solved when the new server appears...
