Actually, the latest news is that someone got hold of some ATI specs after
all and is now trying to get the bttv driver working for the ATI card.
However, don't hold your breath, as he has just started.

Irrespective of the good news, it never hurts to ask manufacturers in a
friendly tone about the status of their support for linux. It also helps
them put out information with the word "Linux" in it on their web sites,
which is a big improvement already in many cases.

Almost all cards are based on the Brooktree chipset. I have a Hauppauge
card, which I am happy with. Other cards should be jsut fine as well, as
long as they have the Brooktree chipset. You can see a list with names of
some of such cards on the video4linux homepage. Most cards are
stand-alone pci cards, some older ones are isa. I haven't heard of any
agp cards and I don't think that makes much sense unless the tv tuner
chips are on the videocard. AFAIK only ATI has that kind of combination
on their All-in-one card.

Cheers,
