I just did a ppp installation, following the directions in Dale Scheetz'
book. It did just what you describe until I made ppp-connect executable:
chmod 700 /etc/ppp/ppp-connect. Then it worked fine. The book seems to say
make it 600, but that didn't work.
I really don't know very much about this, but it did work for me. Hope it does
for you too.
