DAT drives make very little noise if you keep the data streaming to them as fast as they can handle it. If you don't they may make clicking noises every now and then. I'd highly recommend you look into amanda. I use it here, and as long as you're willing to spring for more tapes than you probably originally intended, it does a wonderful job.
